Scottish immigration to New Zealand was significant in the early 19th century. Though Scots made up only 10% of the UK population, they accounted for 30% of UK immigrants to New Zealand between 1830-1900. Many Scots immigrated for opportunities in farming and land ownership. They arrived in New Zealand via ships organized by the New Zealand Company, with the earliest groups settling in Wellington and Canterbury. Scottish immigration had a major impact on shaping New Zealand culture.
